He began his career as an officer with a service in a group of Russian troops in Germany. Then he served in the Ural and Volga-Ural military districts. He went from Platoon Commander to Commander of the 27th Motorized Rifle Division, the largest unit of constant combat readiness in the Volga-Urals Military District at the Totsk training ground.
From 2008 to 2010 he headed the Novosibirsk Higher Military Command School.
In 2010, he was appointed Chief of Staff and First Deputy Commander of the Combined Arms Army of the Central Military District.
Major General Aleksey Salmin was appointed Commander of the 5th Army in 2013. Two years later he received the military rank of Lieutenant General. Later he took up the post of Deputy Commander of the Pacific Fleet.
On December 14, 2017, Lieutenant-General Aleksey Nikolayevich Salmin began to exercise the powers of the Deputy Commander of the Western Military District .
He took a direct part in the military operation of the Russian Federation in the Syrian Arab Republic.
The general was buried in Verkhnyaya Pyshma: his son lives there, and there he was commander of the 341st tank regiment in his youth.
