By decree of the President of the Russian Federation ("closed") of July 19, 2023, Lieutenant General Oleg Yuryevich Tsokov was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation (posthumously) for courage and heroism shown in the performance of military duty.
The "Gold Star" medal was handed over to the Hero's family on August 24, 2023 at the Government House of the Republic of Adygea (Maikop) by Deputy Commander of the Southern Military District, Lieutenant General A. Yu. Avdeev.

Service History

After graduating from college, Oleg served in the Siberian Military District as a platoon and company commander. He participated in the first Chechen war.

From 2000 to 2004, commander of the 2nd Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade, Major, then Lieutenant Colonel. He participated in the second Chechen war.

Since 2004, he has been deputy commander of the 74th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Zvenigorod-Berlin Orders of the Kutuzov and Suvorov Brigade.

Since 2006, he has been the commander of the 228th Motorized Rifle Sevastopol Order of Alexander Nevsky Regiment.

From 2011 to 2014, he was deputy commander of the 33rd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 49th Army of the Southern Military District (Maikop).

From 2014 to 2015, he was commander of the 810th Separate Guards Order of Zhukov of the Marine Brigade named after the 60th anniversary of the formation of the USSR.

From 2015 to 2018, he was commander of the 205th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade (Budennovsk, Stavropol Territory).

From 2018 to 2019, he was Deputy Commander of the 49th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District (Stavropol).

From September 2019 to June 2021, he was a student at the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (Department of National Security and State Defense).

Since February 24, 2022, he has been involved in the war with Ukraine.

Since August 2022, he has been the commander of the 20th Guards Combined Arms Army.

It's widely reported that he was commander of the 144th Guards Motorized Rifle Division. It's unlikely that he went from DC of the 49th CAA down to CO of a division, then up to DC of an entire military district. To date we have not found hard evidence one way or the other. This section will be updated when we have conclusive proof of his August 2022 position.

In September 2022, he was wounded in a missile strike on his headquarters near Svatove.

In February 2023, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and made Deputy Commander of the Southern Military District.

On July 11 2023, at 3:30 AM, Ukraine finally finished the job with a Storm Shadow strike on Dune Hotel in Berdyansk.
