Bondarev's Su-34was likely carrying a UPAB-1500V (УПАБ-1500В) - a precision glide bomb that can strike up to 40km from where it is launched. However, as it is a glide weapon it must be dropped from an altitude of 14km for maximum range, putting the Su-34 in danger of air-defense actions.
At least one pilot was alive after the initial impact to initiate the ejection sequence.
