From 1984 to 1986 he served in the Armed Forces.
In 1986, he began his career from an underground mining foreman to the deputy head of the Lenin mine section of the Voroshilovgradugol PA.
In 1995, he joined the internal affairs bodies and was appointed to the post of policeman of the department of the State Security Service at the Lutuginsky District of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the Luhansk region. He worked his way up to platoon commander of the State Security Service Department.
In 1998, he was appointed to the position of platoon commander of the patrol and post police service of the Lutuginsky District of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the Luhansk region.
From 1998 to 2021, he worked his way up from a district police inspector to the deputy head of the department of district police inspectors of the Lutuginsky District of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the Luhansk region.
In 2015, he joined the ranks of the People's Militia of the LPR and was appointed to the post of senior mechanic-driver.
In 2021, he entered the service in the Internal Affairs Department of the LPR and was appointed to the post of district police inspector of the department of district police inspectors of the Lutuginsky ROVD of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the LPR.
On January 25, 2023, Alexander Mazaev, being part of the Battalion for the Protection of Important Facilities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the LPR, performing combat missions to protect the Luhansk People's Republic, as a result of artillery shelling by the VFU, received a wound incompatible with life.
