On February 24, 2022, Denis took a leave, and secretly from his wife began to acquire equipment. Denis announced his intention to participate to his wife only in May, he was convinced that his place was there. Denis joined his Wagner PMC unit in August, left for Ukraine on 29 September, and was killed in Bakhmut on 7 November.
At the request of the leadership of Wagner, Denis was presented the state award of the Russian Federation - "Order of Courage" posthumously. He was also awarded three Wagner PMC Awards for Blood and Bravery with a gold, red and black cross, which is also the PMC’s highest award.
