Status Corrected - Bellingcat said it had confirmed the death by accessing a Ukrainian intercept of Russian communications, as well as by means of "a Russian source". The Guardian newspaper reported on March 8th that the Ukrainian defense department "broadcast what it claimed was a conversation between two Russian FSB officers discussing the death and complaining that their secure communications were no longer functioning inside Ukraine". Gerasimov was later identified receiving an award in the Popasnaya area in May 2022.

Vitaly Petrovich Gerasimov was born on July 9, 1977 in Kazan. He was a cadet at the Kazan Higher Tank Command School and the Kazan branch of the Chelyabinsk Tank Institute. He took part in military operations in the North Caucasus. He was a commander of a motorized rifle battalion in the North Caucasus Military District.
From 2013 to 2014 - commander of the 15th separate guards motorized rifle Alexandria brigade of the 2nd guards combined arms army of the Central Military District. From 2014 to 2017 - head of the tactics department of the Combined Arms Academy of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, from 2017 to 2019 - student of the faculty of national security and defense of the state of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
