Since February 24, 2022, the armed forces of the DPR have participated in hostilities as part of a special military operation of the Russian Armed Forces to protect the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics.
On March 5, scouts of the Sparta battalion were traveling near the city of Volnovakha, which was blockaded by the Russian army. The Armed Forces of Ukraine opened fire on the Sparta fighters, as a result of which battalion commander Zhoga was mortally wounded. On the same day, by decree of the head of the DPR, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Donetsk People's Republic (posthumously).
The next day, the command of Sparta was taken over by the former chief of staff of the battalion, the Hero's father, Artyom Zhoga.
By the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of March 6, 2022, was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation (posthumously) for heroism and courage shown in the performance of civic duty. The Gold Star medal was presented to the Hero's father on May 9, 2022, in the Kremlin by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
