On August 19, 2022, during a special operation in Ukraine in the DPR, Krasnaya Polyana, during the fighting, he received 2 wounds from an incoming shell, both in the lungs. Medical assistance was provided immediately, but it was not possible to save him.

Sergey was buried in Moscow at the Federal Military Memorial Cemetery, intended for the burial of high-ranking officials and those with particularly important state services to the country.

He was engaged in hand-to-hand combat, wrestling, boxing, participated in boxing competitions, in the last year he had four fights and won them all. He scuba dived, went swimming, jumped with a parachute many times, participated in 40-kilometer marathons in Moscow, and was fond of rock climbing. He had 1 sports category in mountaineering. He was the head of the Kubinka team in the Central Federal District mountaineering championship in 2020. They climbed to the top of Misses-Tau (4420 m) in the Central Caucasus and took 3rd place.
