On July 23, 2022, the Communications Center where Gridnev served was subjected to a rocket and artillery attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The lieutenant colonel, showing courage and dedication, under an enemy missile and artillery attack, took measures to save the personnel of the Communications Center. As a result of Alexander's decisive actions and at the cost of his life, five servicemen were saved. Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Gridnev received a wound incompatible with life and died in a military hospital. Posthumously awarded the Order of Courage.
