When performing combat missions of a special military operation of the guard, Lieutenant Colonel Agafonov received the task from the unit commander to defend the most dangerous sector with units on which the enemy attempted to break through. One day, the enemy went on the offensive with superior forces, supported by two tanks, mortars and artillery, trying to surround and destroy the units led by Yevgeny Agafonov. During the eight-hour battle, the officer received a shell shock, but refused to evacuate and continued to control the battle.
