Laishev worked for Ukraine's security service before joining the separatist military state, the Luhansk People's Republic, as head of intelligence in 2014. The so-called “chief of the MREO (МРЭО)” was hospitalized with a diagnosis of “flame burn of the neck, torso, and limbs of degree II-III over 90% of the body surface, laceration of the left thigh.” He died in the hospital two days later.
