- September 16, 2017, a pair of Ka-52 attack helicopters consisting of the crews of Lieutenant Colonel A.V. Smakhtin and wingman Senior Lieutenant A.S. Volchkov. took off from the Pushkin airfield in the Leningrad region in the area of the Luga training ground to perform training and demonstration shooting. Being at an altitude of about 50 meters, at a speed of 200 km/h, the crew commanders received permission from the leadership of the Zapad-2017 exercise to enter the combat course and prepare for firing. At this moment, there was a spontaneous launch of three unguided S-8 aircraft missiles from the vehicle of the group’s wingman, Senior Lieutenant Volchkov. The fired missiles exploded in close proximity to spectators - military attaches, specialists from the military-industrial complex and journalists. The explosion injured three people and damaged two military trucks. (this incident didn't affect his career)
On April 5, 2022, during a combat mission, he was shot down by an anti-tank missile, but after long-term treatment he recovered and returned to duty.
On May 23, 2023, while performing a combat mission, his helicopter was hit by a MANPADS and crashed. The helicopter crew was killed.
By decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated July 26, 2023, for heroism, courage and bravery shown in the performance of military duty, Major Alexey Sergeevich Volchkov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.
