In January 2023, he left the service due to retirement with the rank of Major, and two months later he signed a contract with the Wagner PMC. Given his work experience, he was offered a position as an instructor at a training camp, but he refused because he believed that he had no right to teach others if he himself had not participated in combat operations.

He became the commander of an assault group.

On May 20, 2023, the Russian flag was raised on high-rise buildings in Bakhmut. On this day, during the final assault, Roman died. He covered his comrades with himself, receiving a mortal wound.
