Corps Deputy Commander - Major General

Unit: 14th Army Corps, Northern Fleet, Western Military District

ℹ️
On September 7, 2022, Vladimir fled Izyum, wounded. At that time he was the commander of the 2nd Guards Motorized Rifle Division of the Russian Armed Forces.

He died on November 28th, 2023, around 14:30 when his car reportedly ran over a mine. Other reports of the event indicate his car may have been fired on by his own BTR82 Command Vehicle.

It should be noted that shortly before his death, well known Russian milblogger Romanov_92 went on a rant against Zavadsky. This, together with the reputation he earned while fleeing Izyum, make it clear that he was not well liked in certain circles.

Sources in the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the Russian Federation, write that the death was the result of “a whole chain of tragic mistakes and coincidences”:

“Zavadsky died at some distance from the line of combat. He (for still unclear reasons) together with three other military men decided to take a ride in a captured car, which the enemies had recently driven. The general did not tell anyone about his desire to take a ride in the car, and our military believed that a Ukrainian [unit] was moving on it. They aimed our mortar at it. The mortars didn’t hit Zavadsky’s car, but he (the general himself was driving) got nervous and tried to quickly get out of the shelling zone. As a result, the car drove into our mine field and blew himself up there. Zavadsky and two other military men, unfortunately, died, another officer who was in the car was wounded."

Note: Ukrainian Commander Magyar contradicts the claims above. He published his version of events on YouTube (included at the bottom of this page)

⚠️
In November 2004, Zavadsky was found guilty in the training-related death of an 11th-grade boy:
The Surgut Garrison Court sentenced Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Zavadsky, finding him guilty of abuse of office (Part 3 of Article 286) in connection with the death of 11th-grader Sasha Bochanov during military training in the autumn of 2003.

The court sentenced Lieutenant Colonel Zavadsky to 4 years of suspended imprisonment with a two-year probationary period, and also deprived him of the right to hold command positions for two years. Vladimir Zavadsky will continue to serve in the army, he has not been stripped of his rank, but after the sentence comes into force, he will be removed from his post as head of the second conscription department of the military registration and enlistment office of the city of Sovetsky (Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug).

Recall that the tragedy occurred on September 5, 2003 at a military training camp, in the village of Pionersky, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. On that fateful day, Sasha, together with other schoolchildren called up for military training, ran a ten-kilometer cross-country run, while the children ran two kilometers in gas masks. This was a mere 30-minutes after eating dinner, and despite regulations limiting training runs to only 3km. The boy could not withstand the load and fell, the military forbade him to take off his gas mask, and the child choked to death on vomit.
