He did not stand aside in the current conflict: he volunteered to the front. On March 11, 2023, he turned 45, and on March 22, he passed away. He died in Bakhmut while performing a combat mission.

A chess tournament was held in memory of Roman Vasilyevich. 12 people took part in the tournament, played according to the Swiss system in 7 rounds, with time control of 10 minutes per game. They didn't even have a picture of the "honored dead" at the tournament.
