The claims seem to originate from the image below, which appears to show a single star with two solid lines on his epaulettes (indicating the rank of Major). However, the single star seems too small for a Major, and the image is clearly a construct. Digging deeper, we found his widow, Svetlana Sutkalova, who clearly stated he was a Junior Lieutenant.
